Our Team
Meet the 72 archivists, software preservationists, metadata stewards, and digital rights experts behind the GFNDC.
While the foundation is headquartered in San Francisco, the majority of our staff operate remotely — from attic offices in Amsterdam to solar-powered cabins in Colorado. Archival work knows no borders, and neither does our team. With contributors across 11 time zones, most of our coordination happens asynchronously via a custom-built messaging platform forked from an abandoned IRC client.
A handful of staff maintain physical presence at our Menlo Park ingest facility and Fort Collins cold vaults, but the vast majority of processing, auditing, and UI emulation tasks are handled from remote locations. Our European contributors are particularly active in metadata normalization and interface archaeology, while U.S.-based teams focus heavily on infrastructure resiliency and digital rights compliance.
As of 2025, the GFNDC supports a growing network of independent volunteers and affiliated researchers working under open archiving agreements. Some contribute two lines of Python per year. Others operate decade-old RAID arrays in their basements for continuity testing. All are essential.
